Comprehensive concrete fracture tests: Size effects of Types 1 & 2, crack length effect and postpeak
نویسندگان
چکیده
The comprehensive fracture tests of notched and unnotched beams presented in the preceding paper are evaluated to clarify the size effects and fracture energy dissipation. The test results for beams with notches of various lengths agree closely with Bažant’s Type 2 size effect law and yield the value of the initial fracture energy Gf. Since nearly complete post-peak softening load–displacement curves have been obtained, the total energy dissipation by fracture can be accurately evaluated and used to determine the RILEM total fracture energy GF. For the present concrete, GF/Gf 2. The transition between the Type 1 and 2 size effects are determined and is found to be very different from that assumed in Hu and Duan’s boundary effect model. Determination of a universal size effect law fitting the beam strengths for all the sizes and all notch depths is relegated to a subsequent paper. 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Cohesive crack, size effect, crack band and work-of-fracture models compared to comprehensive concrete fracture tests
The simplest form of a sufficiently realistic description of the fracture of concrete as well as some other quasibrittle materials is a bilinear softening stress-separation law (or an analogous bilinear law for a crack band). This law is characterized by four independent material parameters: the tensile strength, f ′ t , the stress σk at the change of slope, and two independent fracture energie...
متن کاملComparison of the Hu-Duan Boundary Effect Model with the Size-Shape Effect Law for Quasi-Brittle Fracture Based on New Comprehensive Fracture Tests
The boundary effect model (BEM) for concrete fracture and the effects of specimens size and crack length has previously been criticized on theoretical grounds, but the experimental evidence found in the literature, when taken alone, has been too limited to judge the validity of BEM conclusively. New, separately published, comprehensive fracture experiments, which were made on specimens cast fro...
متن کاملUniversal Size-Shape Effect Law Based on Comprehensive Concrete Fracture Tests
The universal size-shape effect law is a law that describes the dependence of nominal strength of specimen or structure on both its size and the crack (or notch) length, over the entire range of interest, and exhibits the correct small-size and large-size asymptotic properties as required by the cohesive crackmodel (or crack bandmodel). Themain difficulty has been the transition of crack length...
متن کاملSize-Effect Testing of Cohesive Fracture Parameters and Nonuniqueness of Work-of-Fracture Method
The cohesive crack model has been widely accepted as the best compromise for the analysis of fracture of concrete and other quasibrittle materials. The softening stress-separation law of this model is now believed to be best described as a bilinear curve characterized by four parameters: the initial and total fracture energies Gf and GF , the tensile strength f 0t , and the knee-point ordinate ...
متن کاملPart A- Experimental: Experimental Analysis of Crack Propagation in Pre-stressed Concrete Sleepers by Fracture Mechanics
This study investigates propagation of mode I crack in B70 pre-stressed concrete sleepers by fracture mechanics approach. A new experimental analysis is done for notched B70 pre-stressed concrete sleepers with Replica test and image analysis. A scanning electron microscope test (SEM) and an image analysis are applied for the Replica test in order to determine crack length and crack mouth openin...
